Yoga for Children

Yoga for Children.jpg

Yoga for Children

We are opening up a few spaces in Union Tree's advanced teacher training for a module on Yoga for Children, taught by Mira Binzen of Global Family Yoga.

Saturday, Dec. 2 8am - noon and 1pm - 5pm

Sunday, Dec. 3 8am - noon and 1pm - 5pm

Children love Yoga. They love the movement and creative expression associated with the asanas, and they cherish the opportunity to “rest” at the end of each class. Based on sound child development principals, the ancient science of Yoga is turned into fun, engaging, age appropriate stuff kids love.

Children experience the same benefits from a Yoga practice as adults – increased body awareness, overall fitness, mental acuity and stress hardiness. By learning to teach Yoga to children you can help them:

· Develop strength, flexibility and coordination – of both body and mind

· Improve focus

· Raise self-awareness

· Build self-esteem

· Release stress

· Relax completely

· Breathe well

· Cultivate healthy habits

· Generate a sense of inner peace and contentment they can share with the world

The practice of Yoga for children is unsurpassed as a form of preventative health – health on all levels – mental, emotional, physical and spiritual. Through stories and games children develop lifelong healthy habits and are supported in blossoming into their highest potential.

This workshop includes an introduction to the benefits and specialized techniques of teaching Yoga to children ages 5 years old through teens as well as whole families. We then get to become the children and practice a class just as they do. A question and answer session follows with resources for further study. You will walk away with many tools and techniques to share with the children in your life as well as a deeper understanding of yoga.

Swami Satchidanada, a great spiritual leader said, “Children come into this world very pure. It’s up to the adults to help them stay bright, strong and healthy.”

Saturday, Dec. 2 and Sunday, Dec. 3 8am - noon and 1pm - 5pm each day

Weekend training: $325

Many are elaborately designed with a knot feature between each bead - the style we will be making. Please come with your creative mind and a little bit of patience, leave with a priceless art piece. You must register by November 8th to ensure your space! Please note that the duration of this event is only an estimate…some will be done in less time and others may take bit more time.

Sunday, November 5, 2017

5-7pm

What is the Zen Drummer and what does he do?

The Zen Drummer (Damon Grossman) weaves the African djembe under a resonant voice chanting mantras both ancient and original. He will facilitate a transcendent experience with his resonant voice and powerful rhythms, skillfully layering these elements  with a smorgasbord of nature sounds using a  live-looping device. This effectively creates Zen Drummer's rhythmically reverberating relaxing melodic mantric sound bath. Relax and let the combination of these elements calm your nervous system. You will be guided on a journey beyond the mind.

In addition to performing with a wide array of Yoga teachers including, Sianna Sherman, Saul David Raye, Shiva Rae, Zen Drummer conducts a Zen Drummer yoga class called Rhythmic Relaxation and hosts concert events with a 75 minute musical meditation. Also, I have included a link to my debut release Om Gaia. Feel free to download it from the independent musician friendly website, Bandcamp.

The music is informed by a meditative and relentlessly rhythmic sensibility.

Cost: Advance Sale $25, Day of Sale $35

Bio:
Damon's musical sensibilities were refined by his immersion experiences of living in Self-Realization Fellowship ashrams in Escondido and Encinitas from 2013 to 2016 and studying djembe at the Dagbe Institute in Ghana, Africa for extended periods in 2003 and 2007.

Testimonials:
"Amazing!" "An experience!" "Reverberations!" "A journey with the drum and his amazing voice" "Carried by Zen Drummer's presence"

His debut CD release Om Gaia is a largely instrumental offering with an array of instruments produced by Jim Beckwith and can be downloaded through Bandcamp and streamed through iTunes, Spotify, Google play.

Jon Witt:

For the last fifteen years, the yoga mat has been my home. I have been living, studying and teaching yoga in California, New York, Hawaii, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Thailand, Sri Lanka and India.

I grew up on a different kind of mat. I started wrestling competitively at the age of eight. This was my life for ten years, training and competing with some of the best people in the sport, in and out of my home state of Wisconsin. I was fortunate to never suffer any serious injuries, but when I gave up the sport, my body was in need of therapy and relief. In search of a healthier, happier life, I moved to San Diego, California.

While studying in Los Angeles, some friends introduced me to Patrick Creelman, who was then starting up Pure Yoga in Hong Kong.

After leaving Hong Kong in 2007 I spent 6 months with Yogacharya V. Venkatesha of Mysore, India, I completed his Atmavikas Yoga Therapy Teacher Training Course. This was an exceptional opportunity to learn the old traditions the way yoga was originally taught one on one.

Now after my time in Asia it is wonderful being based again in New York. I have had exceptional ride both studying and developing yoga practitioners along the way.  To teach something that has incredibly shifted my life is truly an honor. To all those who have helped shape my life I am eternally grateful.

Autumnal Equinox Yoga Nidra

Autumnal Equinox Yoga Nidra

with Morgan Herum

Autumnal Equinox Nidra.png

 Friday, September 22    7-8:30pm

The Autumnal Equinox marks the balance between light and dark hours of the day as we transition into Autumn's longer nights.  Times of darkness are optimal for dreaming up intentions; during light hours, we act to manifest these intentions into reality.

Autumn is a time to harvest the fruits of past actions, making it a time to celebrate accomplishments, reflect on the connection between past actions and what fruits are present, and then intentionally choose which seeds to sow for the future.

Yoga Nidra, a deeply relaxing practice similar to guided meditation in savasana, tunes us into the shift into Fall and take much needed rest after ripe and bustling summers.

Reiki - Level Two

Saturday August 5, 2017

12 noon - 6pm

with Ryan Hader

In the second degree Reiki course, sometimes given the Japanese name of Okuden (in Japanese, meaning "Inner Teachings") the student learns the use of a number of symbols that enhance the strength and distance over which Reiki can be exerted. This involves the use of symbols to form a temporary connection between the practitioner and the recipient, regardless of location and time, and then to send the Reiki energy. Another attunement is given, which is said to further increase the capacity for Reiki to flow through the student, as well as empowering the use of the symbols. Having completed the second level, the student can work without being physically present with the recipient - a practice known as "distant healing”.  Students will also learn how to send reiki into the past and future, etheric surgery and ‘cord cutting’ as well as the use of crystals in healing treatments.   All students will receive the Reiki level Two attunement.

All participants must have completed a Reiki Level One training, it need not be with Ryan Hader. Be prepared for a 21-day cleanse and daily practice for 21 days as your system acclimates to the frequency of the Level 2 attunement.

Cost: $250.00

The Summer Solstice marks the longest exposure of sunlight the onset of summer, and a shift where daylight hours gradually shortening back to balance between light and dark.  The Summer Solstice is a time to honor our connection with the sun, the nourishment it provides, and the fire element's nature to catalyze change.  According to the Chandogya Upanishad, the Hita nadi connects the heart of each individual to the sun, making this a time to celebrate by all that recognize this nourishing connection.  This summer solstice Yoga Nidra practice will focus on our connection to the sun, fire's ability to burn away impurities, and will leave us transformed, nourished, and energized for the most abundant time of year.

Yoga Nidra is a practice of yogic sleep, in which the practitioner reaches the deepest state of relaxation while maintaining a fully lucid consciousness.  Yoga Nidra develops a deeper relationship with your Self, cleanses the body and mind of tension, and related symptoms including headaches, neck tension, digestion disruptions, insomnia, and has been proven to benefit survivors of PTSD, and chronic pain.  Yoga Nidra decreases cortisol levels, depression, anxiety,  promotes physical and psychological wellbeing, vitality, general health, stress management (Srivastava, Neena, Khushbu Rani, Sc Tiwari, Uma Singh, Gg Agrawal, and Archana Ghildiyal. "Impact of Yoga Nidra on Psychological General Wellbeing in Patients with Menstrual Irregularities: A Randomized Controlled Trial." International Journal of Yoga 4.1 (2011): 20. Web.).

Autumnal Equinox Nidra

Autumnal Equinox Nidra

lead by Morgan Herum

Friday, September 23, 2016

7:30-9pm

The Autumnal Equinox is a time of balance between light and dark hours of the day.  Times of darkness are optimal for dreaming up intentions, and during light times, we work to manifest these intentions into reality.  As we are harvesting the fruit of our labor literally out of the garden and metaphorically out of life, it is a time of celebrating our accomplishments.  As the dark hours lengthen, plants transition to their dormant cycles, making the Autumnal Equinox the opportune moment to check in with your Self, reflect, and to let lie dormant that which doesn't serve you.  By practicing practicing Yoga Nidra, we stay in tune with the seasons, taking much needed rest after ripe and bustling summers.

Yoga nidra is a practice of yogic sleep, in which the practitioner reaches the deepest state of relaxation while maintaining a fully lucid consciousness.  Yoga nidra is a great practice to  develop a deeper relationship with your Self, while cleansing the body and mind of tension, anxiety, and any associated physical symptoms, including headaches, neck tension, and digestion disruptions.  Yoga nidra, when practiced regularly, has proven in various studies to be healing for those surviving insomnia, anxiety, depression, PTSD, and chronic pain.  Also, it has been stated that one hour of yoga nidra is equivalent to four hours of normal sleep!

You will be first guided through a pranayama and mantra practice to center and ground yourself in preparation for yoga nidra.  Following, you will lie in savasana for a yoga nidra practice that will journey between an awakened state and a deep sleep of the body.  Expect to feel totally relaxed and free from all external situations, circumstances, etc.  Bring any blankets, pillows, and warm clothing for the practice to ensure comfort as it is normal for body temperature to drop and to cushion the hardness of the floor.

Cost:    $20 preregistration               $25 at the door

Interoceptive Yoga Series

Kristin Sutter

Kristin Sutter

Throughout the course of our lives circumstances, events and experiences can shock our system and can cause us to lose our capacity to "feel" our own inner body and physical responses. Our day-to-day world can become at the least monochromatic and dull, or at worst, painful.

In this all-levels, four-week series we will practice interoception-using yoga as a tool to build awareness of internal physical sensations, which the mind may typically have a hard time accessing.  Students will be invited to move at their own pace, and there will be no physical assists.

Interoceptive Yoga for Women
